LabyrinthLabyrinth is an intriguing word often used as a metaphor for mystery, confusion, and puzzlement. Commonly confused for a maze, they differ in that labyrinths have a single pathway with no dissecting paths or dead-ends. Despite the cryptic connotations, a labyrinth is an excellent tool for meditation; walking into your problems and out with a solution. A SACRED SPACEMany of the ancient labyrinths were built as sacred spaces honoring the marriage of male and female energy. Mother earth and father sky meet in this plane; the round circle and lunations represent female energy which is then bisected by a pathway to the center and in this particular labyrinth, the center stone stands as the obvious male contribution.Labyrinths have been used in ancient and aboriginal cultures and can be found across the globe: Europe, India, Java, Sumatra, the American Southwest, Africa, and Peru. Visit the library at the Center, for more books and information on labyrinths or attend a facilitated Labyrinth workshop where you will learn a simple walking meditation, learn more about labyrinths and The Labyrinth at Westwoods. The facilitator will be able to field questions on design, the general history of labyrinths as well as introduce an optional meditation. The labyrinth is open to the public, unless being utilized by a program or workshop group. Please call before you come to walk it, 781.329.0711. |
