Hatha YogaIntroduced by Yogi Swatmarama in the 15th century, Hatha yoga is a practice that prepares and purifies the body for higher meditation by balancing the mind and the body. The belief is that the body is comprised of energy channels (nadis) that must be clear and flowing along with alignment of the subtle bodies to prepare the practitioner for a state of higher meditation. Hatha uses a series of asanas (poses) that help to supplement qualities that a person may not naturally possess or that need further development. The poses also strengthen, purify, and balance the endocrine, nervous and circulatory systems. Flexibility, endurance, and stress relief are other common benefits of any kind of yoga.
