Nathan Schechter, RYT

Nathan believes health lies in balance.  As important as methods, techniques, and expertise is the understanding and learning that happens through time in relationships.  Nathan tries to help clients and students learn about some of the nuanced relationships that lie below the surface of their bodies.

Nathan offers Private Therapeutic Yoga Sessions (geared to helping people adapt yoga to specific health and wellness issues), and more general group yoga classes.  Nathan began practicing yoga in 1997.  He became a certified teacher in 2005.

Growing up, Nathan inherited an interest in healing from his parents, a psychiatrist and clinical social worker.  His first traditional jobs were in corporate healthcare, and he also had experiences in working with the mind-body in traditional settings (as a psychiatric counselor at a hospital, and at a school for troubled youth).

In his own life he explored and studied many avenues of healing, both traditional and complementary and alternative, finding yoga to be a very valuable modality in strengthening heart, mind and body, when combined with the support of relationship and dialogue.

Nathan spent seven years after being certified as a yoga teacher researching, practicing and investigating a wide variety of yoga styles, including:   Ashtanga Primary Series, Second Series, Prana Vayu, Iyengar Yoga, Yin Yoga, Anasura Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Power Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Hot (Barkan) Yoga.

His personal experiences, yoga instruction and work with private clients dealing with a wide range of health concerns has led him to a very detailed review of anatomy and kinesiology and other aspects of health and wellness.   As a health coach, he offers consultations and educational seminars.  He has presented on Complementary and Alternative Health Care at Bridgewater State College.  Nathan has a specialty in working with those struggling with back issues on learning how to use yoga to help achieve and maintain back health

     Group Therapeutic Yoga Class

The best way to adapt yoga to individual health and wellness concerns is through a Private Therapeutic Yoga Session.  This Group Therapeutic Yoga Class was formed as an attempt to develop a hybrid class that blends some of the benefits of a private session with some of the techniques of restorative and flowing yoga group classes.

In Hollywood, they might describe the class like this:  “Flow Yoga Meets Therapeutic Yoga.”   Originally a flowing power yoga class, this class now seeks to implement a format that can be more responsive to individual needs, injuries and health and wellness concerns.  While seeking to preserve some of the fun structural elements of a modern yoga class, this class also uses an interactive style, with students offering feedback in the class, while working toward a more individual understanding of how to use the yoga for their needs.

Originally yoga was taught more informally, in the context of existing relationships.

Many modern yoga classes teach yoga to groups through the use of a template (a set series or poses, varied slightly) to allow students an enjoyable repetition. This approach has benefits and drawbacks.  For example, going square dancing a student might watch the others dance, while the “leader” would “call” out the steps.  The “caller/leader” might demonstrate some steps, or give tips on improving.  Smooth square dancing might be considered mastery.

However, one might not wind up with a depth of knowledge about dance itself, or be able to square dance without being led. Nor would one know how to adapt the square dance to an injury.  And the “led” experience of square dancing would be different than taking a college course on dance where an experienced choreographer tries to educate you about dance.

Please note this class is evolving.  Cost $17/class, or $45/3 classes (good for 5 weeks).  Prices and terms subject to change.  Please direct questions to Nathan Schechter,  RYT  (nathanp@rocketmail.com  / (617) 335-9317.
